Discipline and distinction in the age of the Internet: a sociological study of the fitness practice

Abstract This article examines popular fitness sports and home software in China. Drawing on Michel Foucault’s theory of discipline, Norbert Elias’ study civilization, Jean Baudrillard’s the consumer society, authors reveal formation a new body discipline mechanism against background Internet society society. On one hand, external disciplinary strategies have been upgraded, including spatial strategy liquidity visibility, linear rhythmic time strategy, knowledge strategy. other different from discussion we introduce positive self-discipline. As unique consumption practice, practices promote form self-discipline among practitioners who also pursue distinctive social positions. The core content includes code manipulation, consumption, moral display, self-writing. In addition, with continuous infiltration technologies daily life, space-time boundaries physical gradually blur, whereas micro-distribution power changes into distribution form.
